FIELD NOTE 001 / BUILDING AML
The first homepage was fine.
That was the problem.
24 October 2026 · A decision from the build, while it is still fresh.
The first version of Affiliate Marketer’s Life had the things a sensible homepage is supposed to have: a clear headline, generous space, a guide, a toolkit, and buttons that worked.
Then I looked at it and thought: this could belong to anyone.
What the first version said.
THE ORIGINAL HEADLINE
Build something worth clicking.
Nothing wrong with that sentence. It just did not tell you much about the person building the site, or what made this project worth following.
What I actually wanted to show.
I have a day job, a family, and a limited number of hours left at the end of the day. This project has to fit into that life. The homepage needed to start there.
THE NEW DIRECTION
A day job. A side project. And a lot of coffee.
That is the context behind AML: learning and building an affiliate project in the hours available, with enough honesty to show the unfinished parts too.
What changed on the page.
The person: I added my name and the reason I am doing this.
The visual language: a working notebook, an imperfect sticky note, and stronger typography.
The next step: the beginner roadmap is still the main action. Personality should help a reader understand the offer, not bury it.
What this does — and does not — prove.
This is a design and copy decision. I do not have evidence that this version converts better. That needs visitors, a defined action, and results measured over time.
Try this on your own homepage.
Cover the logo and read the first screen. Could the same headline and paragraph sit on ten other websites? If so, add one specific fact about the person, audience, or problem. Then keep one clear next step.
